CedarCity Chamber of Commerce’s Women inBusiness (WIB) invites women to apply for this year’s WIB Scholarship .

Wewill be awarding five (5) $500.00 scholarships. Scholarship awards areavailable for the 2012 school year. Scholarships may be used toward tuition, fees, and/or books.

Scholarships will be awarded to a female senior currently attending an Iron County high school who plans to attend an Iron County accredited university or college.

Non traditional scholarships will also be awarded to a woman entering or re-entering an Iron County university or college after at least a five-year break in her education.

***Note: Southwest Applied Technology College (SWATC)will match the scholarship funds with an additional $500 for any scholarshiprecipient choosing to attend SWATC.

Eligibility

Applicantsmust be women who plan to attend an accredited Iron County university orcollege for the 2012 school year to prepare to enter the workforce or furthertheir career. Applicants must beplanning to attend on at least a half-time basis (minimum six credit hours). Applicants may be either current high schoolseniors or women entering or re-entering a university or college after at leasta five-year break in their education.

These scholarships were made possible through the proceeds of the Pumpkin Festival which is held each year in October. Benefit Dinner for Kensley King

A benefit dinner and auction will be held on February 19, 2011 at the Elks Lodge to benefit Kensley King. Kensley is two years old and has been diagnosed with cancer. Finances are very tedious at this time as her dad has been laid off and her mom only works two and a half days a week (due to Kensley's treatment schedule). Kensley is having to travel to Salt Lake every week for radiation and chemotherapy treatments.

A dinner and auction will be held February 19, 2011 at the Elks Lodge to raise funds to help the family. All proceeds will go directly to the King family for expenses (travel, meals, house necessities, etc.).

It's Time to Look and Feel Your Best!

Why do we gain weight? Why is it hard to lose? Ginger Alldredge and Janie Arnold of Advanced Family Health Care will be our luncheon hosts and speakers in January. They will discuss the different types of fat our bodies have, foods today, and the ongoing "battle of the bulge." They will address the solution and their HCG program. They will also take us on a tour of Advanced Family Health Care.

Advanced Family Health Care, Inc. is located at 1760 North Main, Suite 103 in Cedar City. A catered lunch will be provided. Cost is $10 with RSVP and $12 at the door. RSVPs are strongly encouraged as the lunch is catered and we need to ensure we have enough food for all in attendance.

Leslie Hackett is the franchise owner of the West Jordan, Utah Express Employment Professionals office and the zone developer of the West Zone for Express headquarters in Oklahoma City. In 2004, she left her position as a corporate developer to purchase a franchise in the Salt Lake area and became a franchise developer. Hackett is responsible for the sale and development of franchise offices in Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, and Nevada.

Hackett is a member of the American Staffing Association (ASA) the International Franchise Association (IFA) and the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB). She is certified as a woman-owned business and is a member of the National Women Business Owner’s Corporation (NWBOC) as well as the National Association of Professional and Executive Women.

Her recruiting and staffing career spans across professional, medical, administrative, and commercial specialties. Before joining Express, Hackett worked as an internal management consultant in the home health industry. As a registered nurse, she worked in clinical settings including medical/surgical, intensive care, and nursing leadership. She received her diploma in nursing from Presbyterian/St. Luke’s School of Nursing and her bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver, Colorado.

Hackett and her husband, Dan, live in Park City, Utah. They have two grown children, Emily and Benjamin, who live in Denver, Colorado.

Pumpkin Festival Working Lunch

Join Women in Business on the grounds of the Randall L. Jones Theatre for a working lunch in preparation for the 10th annual Pumpkin Festival. The luncheon will be held at noon on Friday October 22, 2010.

We will not have a guest speaker this month as we will be making a few preparations for the Pumpkin Festival which will be held the following day (Saturday October 23). If you plan to attend, please RSVP no later than Wednesday October 20th. We will only be ordering enough lunches for those who RSVP by this date.

The Pumpkin Festival is an amazing community event, and the proceeds go toward the Women in Business Scholarship Fund. Roll up your sleeves and come ready to help set up for the 10th annual Pumpkin Festival!

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Kick off Breast Cancer Awareness Month at the “Launch Your World Wrapped in Pink” event.

The event will be held Saturday, October 9, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Iron Mine Race Park in Cedar City. There is a $20 gate fee donation, and proceeds will go towards local women battling breast cancer (specifically women without insurance).

If you know of a woman in Cedar City who is battling breast cancer and doesn’t have insurance, please contact Darci Hansen (Elanwoman@aol.com) as soon as possible. Darci would like to include a Cedar City woman as one of the benefactors of this event.

The first 100 in the gate will receive an autographed copy of the book “My Friends Have Cancer What Can I Do?” by Barb Pridie. Activities include a walk-a-thon and ATV lessons taught by women quad racers.

Darci Hansen, Elan Woman Magazine

Darci Hansen will be the guest speaker for Women in Business on September 15, 2010. Her topic includes discussing how to achieve a work-life-community balance, specifically for women.
Darci is the editor of Elan Woman Magazine. She founded this magazine while also helping her husband run Hansen Landscaping, a three-time Best of State Company. In addition to her work with Elan Woman and her husband’s landscaping business, Darci has been very involved in her community. She served on the Utah State PTA Board for over 10 years. She also served as a member of the 2002 Olympic and Para-Olympic Committees, a member of the American Cancer Society Board, and as the chairman of the Washington County School District Foundation Board.
In 2007, Darci was recognized by the St. George Chamber of Commerce as the Entrepreneur of the Year. In 2008, she was recognized for excellence in the area of media communications as a recipient of the Women of Achievement Award by the St. George Chapter of Business and Professional Women.

Gina Ratcliff

Gina Ratcliff is a native of Southern California who relocated to Southern Utah 18 years ago. “A very good decision” she says. Her quest for learning and growth has brought her many opportunities in life. She was a hairdresser for 30+ years, and she has worked in human resources, real estate, and mortgage lending. She opened a whole food restaurant and is currently working as the Program Director for Cedar Natural Health Center.
Through it all, her passion has been helping people; especially in the area of the mind, body, and spirit connection. She is a master rapid eye technician and a licensed facilitator for the “Am I Hungry? Mindful Eating Program.”
She has been married to the love of her life for 32 years and is the mother of three wonderful children and grandmother to four amazing grandchildren.

Volunteers Needed - Chamber Golf Tournament

Women in Business is considering sponsoring a hole at the golf tournament for the Chamber of Commerce. The tournament will be August 25, 2010 beginning at 1:00.

We are looking for volunteers to be at the hole we sponsor throughout the tournament. This is a great opportunity to network with local businesses who participate in the golf tournament, promote Women in Business, and also promote your own business.

Sherrie Hansen, State Farm

Sherrie Hansen will be our Women in Business guest speaker on July 21, 2010.

Sherrie has been in the insurance and financial services business for 24 years. She earned her bachelor's degree in education from Utah State University. She taught high school for 8 years before starting her insurance business in St. George, Utah with State Farm Insurance.. She built her business by helping her clients protect their assets, recover from the unexpected, and by helping them reach their dreams and prepare for retirement.

Sherrie spent four years in management with State Farm as an agency consultant in Colorado and returned to Cedar City, Utah in 2000 to again run her own State Farm Insurance business. She is licensed as a registered representative for State Farm VP Management Corp, Underwriter and Distributor of Securities Products, and is a member of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisers .

Sherrie is actively involved in the community where she serves on the Safety Solutions Coalition, the WWII Memorial and the Veterans Memorial Park Committee, and the Chamber of Commerce Board. She is a member of the Professional Advisory Committee for Planned Gifting at Southern Utah University. She is an active member of the Rotary Club of Cedar City and served as the first female president of the club.

Last year Sherrie completed a course from the American College entitled “Marketing Financial Services To Women.” She knows that women are powerful consumers but are overlooked, misunderstood, and underestimated. Women make up 53% of today’s financial wealth. She wants women to be empowered with knowledge so they can manage, grow, and protect their investments and assets. Making sure each client has the proper insurance and financial program in place so they are prepared for what the future holds is her main goal and objective.

Jory Corsi, Catering Manager

Jory is the Catering Manager for Chartwells Dining Service on the SUU Campus. He comes to Chartwells with over eight years of experience in catering and event planning. Having worked with many of the special event and catering companies in Salt Lake City, Utah, he is excited to be here in Cedar City.

Some of Jory's more noteworthy accomplishments include planning events for the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics and spending many years coordinating events for the Sundance Film Festival.

Joni Anderson will be the guest speaker for Women in Business on May 19, 2010. Joni is the Assistant Director of the Southern Utah University Small Business Development Center and Procurement Technical Assistance Center.

Joni's topic will be "Helping Your Business Succeed." She will discuss the importance of business planning, customer service, and more.

Joni provides in-depth, high quality, one-on-one business counseling sessions to entrepreneurs and potential entrepreneurs. She also assists companies who are seeking to do business with the government by providing quality bid-matching solutions and government contracting guidance. Joni develops and coordinates business training and counseling as needed for both pre-venture and existing business clients throughout Iron, Beaver, and Garfield counties.

Joni has been with the SUU Small Business Development Center and Procurement Technical Assistance Center since 1997. She received a B.S. in Business Administration from Southern Utah University (1998), and an M.B.A. from Southern Utah University (2006). She has also been co-owner/manager in a small family-owned business.

JULIE ROBBINS

Julie Robbins with the Department of Workforce Services will be speaking at our April 21st luncheon. She started working for the State of Utah in 1982 for the Department of Employment Security in the Uintah Basin. During that time she worked with those individuals filing unemployment claims, adjudication issues, and federal grant monies. Administered Job Training Partnership Act training dollars for those individuals without marketable skills to obtain a short- term two-year training program to become self-sufficient.

Julie relocated with her family to Cedar City and worked at Cedar High School as the School to Careers Counselor, placing students on internships matching their interests, skills, and abilities. The program gave students a great experience in deciding what career path to take before exiting high school. This was a great partnership for employers and students to have real life experiences in the world of work.

Julie is currently working with the Choose to Work Program through the Department of Workforce Services and the Utah State Office of Rehabilitation. The program provides job development and placement services to Utah job seekers with disabilities, offering employers a constant source of job applicants. She also delivers a broad range of workforce services to employers, job seekers and the general public.

Dr. Susan R. Madsen

Susan R. Madsen will be speaking on women in leadership at the March 17th luncheon. She is an associate professor of management at Utah Valley University and an independent leadership and change consultant.

Susan has been heavily involved for many years in researching the lifetime development of prominent women leaders. She has personally interviewed a host of women university presidents, governors, and international leaders.

Her first book titled “On Becoming a Woman Leader: Learning from the Experiences of University Presidents” was released in 2008, and her second book titled “Developing Leadership: Learning from the Experiences of Women Governors” was published in 2009.

She is now doing related leadership research and consulting in the United Arab Emirates and China. She is also currently working with the Utah System of Higher Education to conduct research related to the lower percentage of female college students in Utah compared with the nation.

Susan has published over 50 articles in peer-reviewed scholarly journals and speaks and presents often in local, national, and international academic and non-academic settings. In 2007 she received a prestigious research award from the Academy of Human Resource Development and has also received numerous awards and honors for her teaching and scholarship at her institution and beyond.

Susan serves as an editorial board member and reviewer for many academic journals. Susan’s research and consulting work have focused on leadership development, change, ethics, strategic faculty development, and work-life integration. Susan received her doctorate degree from the University of Minnesota in Work, Community, and Family Education with a specialization in human resource development. She has other degrees in exercise science/wellness and speech communication education and started her career many years ago as a middle school speech and debate teacher.

She currently lives in Highland Utah with her husband and children and enjoys racquetball, soccer, snowshoeing, golf, hiking, and community involvement.

LAURIE HANSEN

Laurie Hansen will be speaking on women's health at our February 17, 2010 luncheon.

Laurie delivers babies at Valley View Medical Center, in Cedar City, Utah. She provides medical care, health education and support services to women in all phases of their lives. From the first gynecological exam, to pregnancy and childbirth and through menopause, she is committed to treating each patient with the utmost respect, care and sensitivity.

As a Certified Nurse Midwife, (CNM), Laurie is educated in the two disciplines of nursing and midwifery. She graduated in 1977 from Westminister College, with a bachelors of science degree in nursing. She worked as a RN in labor and delivery at LDS Hospital for over 15 years, before returning to school. After obtaining a masters of science in nurse-midwifery at the University of Utah, she worked as a CNM at LDS Hospital until she moved to Cedar City in 1997. She opened the first nurse midwifery practice here in Cedar City. She is certified by the American College of Nurse Midwives.

TERRY KEYES

Terry Keyes will be speaking at our January luncheon. He is Vice President and Relationship Manager for Wells Fargo Bank in Cedar City. He specializes in helping business owners maximize banking technology to help save them time and money.

Terry is also the president and CEO of The Pegasus Consulting Group, a consulting firm that provides a variety of services for business owners that include business plan development, training, employee development. and marketing research along with coaching and mentoring.

During the last year Terry completed the Utah Dispute Resolution Course given by the Utah Bar Association qualifying him as a mediation specialist.

Terry has authored several articles in local publications on topics dealing with The Economic Value of Shopping Local and The Value of a Business Plan. He holds an MBA from the prestigious Webster University and is an adjunct professor in the School of Business at Southern Utah University where he has taught for the past eight years.

Terry is married and has four children. He his actively involved in the Cedar City Area Chamber of Commerce, The Board of Directors for the Cedar City Rotary Club where he is President Elect for the 2010-2011 year, Little League baseball, The Shop Local campaign, and many other local non-profit groups.

In his free time Terry likes to spend time with his kids, usually at sporting events and his favorite hobbies: cooking and traveling.

Christmas Electric Light Parade

The 24th annual Christmas Electric Light Parade will be held Saturday December 12th, 2009. The theme is "Christmas Around the World."

Donna received her undergraduate degree from the State University of New York at Albany and her Master's Degree from Utah State University. Her doctoral dissertation (a work in progress) is entitled Homogeneity in Heterogeneous Environments? An Analysis of Generation Theory Applied to College Generations. Donna has worked in various higher education administrative capacities at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, New York, Colorado Northwestern Community College in Rangely, Colorado, Utah State University in Logan, Utah, Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan and Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia. Donna has been married to her husband Jerry for 18 years.

MARIA TWITCHELL

Maria Twitchell will be speaking at our August 19, 2009 meeting. Maria was born and raised in Cedar City, Utah and attended Southern Utah University where she graduated with a B.S. degree in Communications. Following graduation Maria accepted a position with Iron County and served in various marketing positions for the county tourism office. She was promoted to Executive Director of the Cedar City –Brian Head Tourism Bureau & Iron County Visitor Center in 1995, becoming the youngest tourism executive director in Utah at that time. Maria loves her job and serves on my boards and committees, including the Cedar City Area Chamber of Commerce, Iron Mission Foundation, Brian Head Chamber of Commerce, Iron County Restaurant Tax Board, and IHC Community Financial Relations Committee.

Maria combines her love of hiking, skiing, river rafting, travel and photography with her career, which makes her life truly fulfilled. Maria is married to Jimmy Twitchell and they have a 16 year old daughter, Amanda (the light of our lives) and two other “children”, a duschund named Scooter (or Little Man) and a yellow lab named Abbey.

Greg Powell will be speaking on customer service at our July luncheon. Greg holds a M.B.A. from Utah State University. He is currently an Associate Professor of Management in the School of Business at Southern Utah University, where he teaches Management, Leadership and Organizational Behavior. He is the former Director of the Southern Utah University Small Business Development Center.

Greg is a founding partner of Meridian Consulting Group, LC. MCG offers a variety of services to small and medium size ventures including, management coaching and development, business strategy, marketing research, and economic research and analysis. Greg's personal expertise lies in the areas of change management, leadership and executive/supervisor development, and customer service. Fraya Aguilar, Director of Sha'Waza Belly Dance will be speaking at our June luncheon. She has been learning and teaching belly dance in southern Utah since 1996. She will be speaking on how moving meditation and gestures of gratitude and humility in the form of dance and music can help overcome daily obstacles, give appreciation for all things, celebrate life, movement, and womanhood.

Sha'Waza Belly Dance was founded with the sole purpose to inspire every woman to discover her true inner strength and beauty and feel free to express it in all aspects of her life, not just dance.

Fraya started dancing when she was four years old, and continued on throughout her life. She started teaching belly dance in 2002. She currently teaches at Dixie State College and Spirit Fitness Club.

Fraya discovered her other life's calling in 2001 when she became a clinical assistant and wellness consultant for the Natural Healing & Wellness Center in St. George. She earned her Bachelor of Natural Health Studies in 2009 and is a life coach and wellness consultant. She is currently working with the doctors of NHWC as a site solutions manager with her husband setting up wellness centers in southern California. She plans to attend school for her Doctorate in Physical Therapy and/or Osteopathics in 2010.

Freya's other passions include her two children Rayne and Amber, her husband and business partner Billy, her Peruvian Paso filly, designing and sewing costumes, designing custom homes, classic cars, and writing books.

He began his education seeking entry into the health care field as a psychiatric technician; wherein he could work as a nurse in the mental health and developmentally disabled hospitals. He received his state license in 1979. He worked in this field for the next 10 years. Knowing he had more to do with his life, he continued to pursue his goal of being a doctor. He attended the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic and earned a degree and title of Doctor of Chiropractic.

He is active in the community bringing the concepts of restoring health and preventive wellness to Cedar City and the surrounding communities via a weekly radio program – “Cedar City Health." He accepts calls from the community and discusses various health and well being related topics.

The Cynthia Kimball Humphreys is an author, cancer survivor, consultant, motivational speaker, success coach, and trainer. She is a co-founder of The Kimball Family Foundation, a cancer foundation, and of Every1Counts, LLC. She has appeared in 'People’ magazine and on CNN. Presently, Cynthia's appearing in Myriad Genetic Laboratories, Inc public awareness advertising campaign -- known as the BRACAnalysis® Awareness Campaign, participating as a patient speaker.

Currently, Cynthia conducts workshops, seminars and speaks at conferences on topics including but not limited to: My "Breast Friend”, Networking: Conversations with Customers, Radiating Corporate Cancer, The Impact of Thank You, and You Matter No Matter What. Additionally, Cynthia writes an Every1counts column for several Southern Utah newsprint and is also a correspondent for Deseret News out of Salt Lake City. She also conducts success coaching for individuals and teams.

Formerly, Cynthia was a vice president at Southwest Applied Technology College in Cedar City, Utah. In Washington State, she worked for Bates Technical College in their Business and Management Training Center and Department of Academics. Cynthia has taught English as a Second Language in Japan.

Cynthia earned a B.A. in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She went on to receive an M.A. in Education from American Intercontinental University. Additionally, Cynthia graduated from the University of Washington’s Training Specialist Program. For the last ten years, Cynthia’s been conducting training and development through various organizations such as Dale Carnegie Training Bates Business and Management Training Center (facilitating Lou Tice’s Success Strategies training), and Southwest Applied Technology College (facilitating "Love 'Em or Lose 'Em" training). Cynthia was also instrumental in creating and facilitating Personal Enrichment Training for The Boeing Company’s Quality Through Training Program.

Cynthia serves on the Patient Education Steering Committee at the Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Gina Ratcliff will be speaking at our February 18th luncheon. She has been a resident of Iron County for over 15 years. A native of Southern California, she loves the Southern Utah area and thinks moving here was “one of the best decisions we’ve ever made.”
Gina has had a wide range of careers from cosmetologist to mortgage officer to restaurant owner. The common thread in each profession has been a desire to help and serve others. As part of her desire to help people became a Certified Rapid Eye Technician. Rapid Eye Technology is a safe, natural and very effective way of helping people release stress, anxiety, trauma, depression, etc. She has seen great success and loves facilitating others in changing their lives for the better. She also teaches Life Skills classes which encourage people to make permanent positive changes in their lives.

The speaker for our January 21st luncheon is Dr. Marcus Peterson, M.D. Dr. Peterson is a first class, Board Certified Plastic Surgeon. He began his education at Brigham Young University and continued at the Edward Hebert School of Medicine. He completed general surgery internship and residency as well as plastic surgery residency at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center. He practiced as a General Surgeon for 4 years, and has been in practice as a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon for the last 10 years.

In 2008 Dr. Peterson was awarded the honor of being named one of America’s Top Plastic Surgeons by the Consumer Research Council of America. He served in the United States Air Force from 1982 to 2004 achieving the rank of Colonel. He is certified with The American Board of Surgery and is an active member of The American Society of Plastic Surgeons, A Fellow of American College of Surgeons, and a member of American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

LYNN DRIGGERS

Lynn Driggers will be speaking at the November 14th luncheon. Due to her passion for fitness and nutrition she feels strongly about sharing her knowledge in these areas with others. She will cover the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle, tips on how to fit fitness into a busy schedule, easy healthy cooking ideas, tools for self motivation, and techniques for stress management. She is determined to convince woman that they owe it to themselves to do what it takes to live a healthy, vivacious life!

Lynn has been certified by the American Council of Exercise as a personal trainer for five years. She currently works with clients at Spirit Fitness in Cedar City, as well as training clients in their homes. Lynn also teaches yoga and Pilates classes at Spirit Fitness and the Janet-Lynn Yoga Studio in Parowan. She has taught Power Yoga at Sage Hills Yoga Studio in Cedar City.

Lynn has been an endurance sport enthusiast for many years, completing several marathons, triathlons, and adventure races. This past April she finished her first Ironman triathlon in Tempe, Arizona. Over the past few years Lynn has worked as a white water rafting guide in Moab, Utah, and as a ski instructor at Brian Head Resort. She also enjoys many outdoor adventure sports including rock climbing, mountain biking, and kayaking.

PUMPKIN FESTIVAL

Local businesses are excited to celebrate autumn by participating in the 8th annual Pumpkin Festival on Saturday, Oct. 25 from 10 am to 1 pm on the grounds of the Randall L. Jones Theater.

The event is put on by the Cedar City Area Chamber of Commerce’s Women In Business and the Utah Shakespearean Festival. Andrea Cook, Women In Business President, said most of the supplies and activities are donated by local businesses and that the festival has been successful in the past due to the communities support.

For $5, children will receive a wristband to access most of the activities including cookie decorating, jumping in the leaf corral, and pumpkin painting. “It really is a great way for kids to enjoy the season,” said Cook.

The festival is put on as a fundraiser for the WIB scholarship program. “We appreciate the community’s support in our activities to build these scholarship funds throughout the year, - it really is a community effort,” said Cook. In December, two $500 scholarships will be awarded to women pursuing degrees at an Iron County university or college.

Cedar City Area Chamber of Commerce Women In Business invites women to apply for this year’s WIB scholarship Program to attend an accredited university or college in Iron County.

Eligible women may apply no later than December 1, 2008 by completing an application available at the Cedar City Area Chamber offices. Applicants must be women who plan to attend an Iron County university or college during the 2009-2010 school year.

In December two $500 scholarships will be awarded. One will be awarded to a female senior currently attending an Iron County high school, and the other will be awarded to a women entering or re-entering school after a five year or longer break in her education.

More scholarship information will be available at the next Women In Business meeting on Sept. 19 at 12 p.m., at The Garden House. The luncheon will feature Joni Anderson, Assistant Director of the Utah Small Business Development Center.

The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Southern Utah University provides free one-on-one counseling services to small businesses and potential entrepreneurs. Assistance is provided for comprehensive business planning, market research, financial statement analysis, cash flow analysis, financial projections and other management issues. The SBDC also offers low cost training workshops on various business subjects. SUU’s SBDC serves Iron, Beaver and Garfield counties.

Co-located with the SBDC is the Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) which provides assistance to businesses wanting to sell to the federal, state and local government, and other large organizations in the region – both public and private.

CEDAR CITY – Cedar City Area Chamber of Commerce President Steve Mickey announced the resignation of executive director Donna M. Brown on Friday. Brown will remain with the 90-year-old non-profit organization through Sept. 14 to facilitate a smooth transition.

“Donna’s legacy will be her key involvement in many events including Three Wishes -- an NBC Reality Show filmed in Cedar City netting the community a new fire engine and tens of thousands in property improvements and gifts to residents -- the China Trade Trip, and the Utah State Chamber Conference.” Mickey said. “We wish her the best on her new venture.”

Brown, a Utah native, has served as executive director for the past 3-1/2 years. During her tenure the chamber experienced significant growth, added multiple new events and even put a global spin on services to the local community with an educational trip to China. “I’m proud of our accomplishments. It takes multiple team members to accomplish all we have and I’m grateful for the experience,” Brown said. Brown said she will shift focus back to her children and launch a new writing business providing full website content for local businesses. Brown has an extensive background in journalism for which she has earned national honors.

The Cedar City Area Chamber of Commerce is a non-profit business organization of 420 members. It provides tools including education, networking opportunities and low-cost group marketing opportunities to businesses throughout Southern Utah. The speaker for our July meeting will be the Iron Mission State Park Museum's curator, Ryan Paul. As the curator Mr. Paul is responsible for collections management, exhibit development, interpretation, education, grant writing, educational outreach, special exhibit coordination, research, technical reports and articles, tours and general visitor services. Mr Paul has a M. A. in history and a B. A. in history with 12 years of experience in curatorial, collection and education related services. He has additional training in collections software, conservation and Certified Public Management. Professional affiliations include the Utah Historical Society, Utah Museum Association, Organization of American Historians, Early American Industries Association, National Trust for Historic Preservation, Utah Heritage Foundation, Old Spanish Trails Association, Carriage Association of America, and Conference of Intermountain Archivists. Mr Paul is the Iron Mission liaison with the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and the Sons of the Utah Pioneers associations, he is the past president of the Iron County Historical Society and a member of the Utah Museum.

The Iron Works Homestead is an expansion of Iron Mission State Park Museum that is currently underway. The expansion will add more buildings, hands on activities and living history demonstrations. We are attempting to raise community awareness and support for this project through presentations to various community organizations. Our presentations consist of a short DVD followed by a question and answer session. Through these presentations we try to let community members know what we are doing at the park, help them understand the value of the project, and how they can help us reach our goals.

Officer Barbara Barrick will be speaking on June 20, 2008 about self defense. Barbara grew up in Long Beach, California and moved to Cedar City in 1992. She has worked at the Police Department since 1997, beginning as a receptionist, then promoting to executive secretary to Chief Robert Allinson, a position she held for eight years. Two years ago, a Code Enforcement Officer position became available and Barbara tested and was selected. She attended the Police Academy to attain her Special Functions Officer certification and is currently serving the department as one of the two Code Enforcement Officers.

Barbara is the mother of four grown children and one grandchild. She and her husband of five years, Robert, live in Parowan.

Allyson Jackson

Allyson M. Jackson will be speaking at the May 16th meeting. She is the Regional General Manager for SMG and responsible for more than million square feet of meeting and exhibition space including the Salt Palace Convention Center, South Towne Exposition Center; Ogden Eccles Conference Center and Peery Egyptian Theater all in Utah and the Lynnwood Convention Center in Lynnwood, WA.

She has 30 years invested in the hospitality industry with the first 21 being with Delta Air Lines as a sales executive. She joined SMG as Director of Sales and Marketing in 1998 and loves the facility side of things. In 2004 SMG named her General Manager and she joined a very exclusive group (less than 10 in the US) of women running convention centers of 400,000 or more square feet.

A beach girl through and through – she has lived in Salt Lake City for 20 years with her husband and three children.

Dr. Lisa Mills

Dr. Lisa Mills will speak at the April 18, 2008 meeting. Dr. Lisa Mills, from Topeka, Kansas, moved to Cedar City in the fall of 2007 as a board certified gynecologist and obstetrician. She joined the practice of Dr. Daren Gatherum in the Intermountain Cedar City Clinic.

Dr. Mills received her bachelor’s degree in 1996 at Washburn University in Topeka and attended medical school in Kansas City at the University of Health Sciences. She completed her residency training at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi in 2004. She then continued an adventurous medical career with the military at the Misawa Air Force Base in Misawa, Japan until 2006 when she continued practicing medicine at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia. She remained there until moving to Cedar City.

She is board certified through the Fellow of American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and is excited to be the first female OB/GYN physician in the community.

Dr. Mills loves hiking, camping, scuba diving and is spending much of her time planning her upcoming wedding to Cedar City resident Joey Goularte.

Janine's Story:

I never had a desire to teach financial principles.

My real passion is science. I started my Master's degree in Education hoping that one day I could teach my favorite topics, Chemistry and Theoretical Physics. (Yep, I'm a card-carrying geek.) I have long dreamed of spending whole semesters describing the nature of Pi, Zero, and Probabilities to eager young minds. (A really major geek!) I know that not everyone shares my science passion, so I'll leave that story for another day.

First, please know that my own financial situation is not unique. Ten years ago, my husband Brad and I were both employed in corporate America, living the DINK (dual-income-no-kids) lifestyle to the fullest. Suddenly, WHAM! A mid-life pregnancy (the first of four), and our income tumbled by almost half. And that is the nature of life, isn't it? Our unexpected expenses competing with sudden erosion of our incomes.

I was abruptly faced with that question that we all face: what do I do now? It was at this point that I started stumbling on to some fundamental principles about money, principles that can power anyone to wealth accumulation and financial independence. It all started when my husband handed me a magazine article entitled "Live on $17,500 a Year," written by a Maine housewife with six children named Amy Dacyczyn (pronounced "decision"). Amy was the author of The Tightwad Gazette, a book dedicated to doing more with less AND still living a contented life. After reading this book, my new job (in addition to stay-at-home mom) was to slash our family's expenses without deprivation or starvation. I then read Your Money or Your Life by Joe Dominguez and Vicki Robin, a volume that encouraged people to understand the philosophical nature of money. Together, these two books became my gold standard for financial health and well being. By adapting the concepts in these books and inventing new ones of my own, I found that my family was saving more money then we ever had while I was working a full-time job! My husband was dumbfounded at how such simple steps produce this miracle when our income had dropped by so much.

At this point Brad was offered a new job in southern California, which is not exactly the haven of the cheap carefree life! We made the move, but I knew that I had to develop a solid financial plan for my family, one that would promote wealth accumulation and financial independence. My vision was to have enough assets so that my husband could retire from corporate life in only 14 years. So, I dug even deeper into the literature on frugality and financial well being, implemented the principles, and BANG! Brad retired from corporate life in only seven years - even while we added three more children and were challenged with a series of serious medical conditions.

How did we do it? We followed universal principles of wealth accumulation. How do we know that these principles are true? Simple. We used them to gain our own financial independence, and I have been helping other families to collect wealth by mentoring them in these same concepts.
